Principe White-eye

The Principe White-eye, Zosterops ficedulinus, is a small passerine bird endemic to the island of Príncipe in the Gulf of Guinea. First described by naturalist Gustav Hartlaub in 1866, the species emerged from a period of intense ornithological exploration in West Africa during the mid-19th century. Its taxonomy reflects the isolation of the Principe ecosystem, where avian lineages evolved distinct morphological traits, such as its characteristic rounded wing and tail shapes, which are adapted for maneuvering through dense forest understories.

The species is categorized within the Zosteropidae family, often referred to as white-eyes for the distinctive ring of white feathers encircling the eye. Evolutionary biologists and ornithologists view this bird as a critical subject for understanding island speciation and biogeography. While it is not a crafted object in the traditional sense, its conservation history is defined by its vulnerability to habitat loss, leading to ongoing scientific efforts to document its population and environmental requirements to ensure the species' survival.
