Kittlitz's Murrelet

The Kittlitz's Murrelet, Brachyramphus brevirostris, is a small, elusive seabird that breeds primarily in the remote coastal regions of Alaska and eastern Siberia. Identified in the 19th century, the species evolved to thrive in high-latitude environments, often nesting in barren, rocky scree fields far from traditional forested habitats. Its name commemorates the German naturalist Heinrich von Kittlitz, who encountered the species during his exploration of the North Pacific in the 1820s.

The bird's design is a marvel of evolutionary adaptation, characterized by a pointed wing shape for efficient flight over frigid waters and a rounded tail that assists in precise maneuvering near glacial fronts. Ornithologists have long noted the species' cryptic plumage, which allows it to blend seamlessly into the lichen-covered rocks of its nesting grounds. Due to its secretive nature and reliance on receding glaciers for foraging, it remains one of the least studied and most conservation-sensitive alcids in the world.
