Lattice-tailed Trogon

The Lattice-tailed Trogon, Trogon clathratus, is a member of the Trogonidae family native to the humid forests of Costa Rica and western Panama. First described by German ornithologist Jean Cabanis in 1862, this species is defined by its distinct morphological features, most notably the intricate, lattice-like barring on the rectrices of the male, which gives the species its common name. Like other members of its genus, it is primarily an inhabitant of the canopy and sub-canopy, where it maintains a sedentary lifestyle in relatively stable, high-altitude rainforest ecosystems.

The design of the bird’s plumage is a classic evolutionary adaptation for life in dense, dappled forest environments. Its rounded wing shape facilitates short, agile bursts of flight between branches rather than sustained aerial migration, and its rounded tail allows for maneuverability while foraging for fruits and insects.
