Papuan King-Parrot

The Papuan King-Parrot, classified as Alisterus chloropterus, is a medium-sized psittacine native to the tropical rainforests of New Guinea. It was formally described by the ornithologist Salvadori in 1876. As a member of the Alisterus genus, it evolved within the dense, humid canopy environments of the island, which necessitated its distinctive morphological features such as broad wings for maneuverability amidst thick foliage and a long, graduated, pointed tail that aids in balance while perched or foraging in the mid-to-upper strata of the forest.

The species is characterized by a vibrant plumage that serves as an adaptation for visual signaling within the dappled light of the rainforest.
