Puff-backed Bulbul

The puff-backed bulbul, scientifically classified as Microtarsus eutilotus, is an arboreal passerine bird native to the lowland forests of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. First formally described in the 19th century, it was historically placed within the Pycnonotus genus before being moved to its current classification. Like many species in the Bulbul family, it is characterized by its inconspicuous behavior and specialized habitat requirements within dense, primary evergreen forests.

The bird's design features—specifically its rounded wing and tail shapes—are evolutionary adaptations suited for life in the dense mid-canopy layer of Southeast Asian rainforests. These morphological traits allow for short, agile bursts of flight between branches rather than long-distance aerial migration. Because of its quiet demeanor and preference for the canopy, the species is often difficult to observe, leading to a history of being identified more frequently through its vocalizations than through direct sightings by ornithologists and researchers.
