A System of Christian Doctrine by Isaak August Dorner represents the culmination of 19th-century German Protestant speculative theology. Originally published in German as System der christlichen Glaubenslehre, this work was translated into English and released by T. & T. Clark in 1880 as part of their influential Foreign Theological Library. The text was intended to reconcile traditional Lutheran dogmatics with the burgeoning intellectual landscape of modern philosophy and historical criticism.

Dorner, a professor at the University of Berlin, designed this system to emphasize the relational nature of God and the development of Christian identity through history. His work was highly regarded in its time for its intellectual rigor, though it was often criticized by contemporary orthodox thinkers for its perceived flexibility regarding traditional dogma. As a cornerstone of the T. & T. Clark theological series, it served as a primary reference for generations of English-speaking clergy and seminary students throughout the late Victorian era.
