Das Rolandslied in den Bildern der Heidelberger Handschrift

Published in 1977 by Dr. Ludwig Reichert Verlag, this volume serves as a scholarly facsimile and commentary on the Rolandslied, the Middle High German adaptation of the French Chanson de Roland attributed to the priest Konrad. The project was conceived to provide accessible insight into the famous Heidelberg Manuscript (Codex Palatinus Germanus 112), a crucial source for medieval German literature that documents the heroic deeds of Roland in the service of Charlemagne.

Wilfried Werner, a dedicated librarian and historian at the Heidelberg University Library, curated this edition to highlight the manuscript's unique visual program. His work centers on the illuminations that accompany the epic, analyzing how the illustrations reflect the stylistic conventions of the late 12th century. The publication was well received in academic circles for its role in bringing the visual narrative of the manuscript to a wider audience, serving as a definitive reference for researchers interested in the intersection of medieval book illumination and heroic epic poetry.
