Where it came from
Day Boy was published in 2015 by Text Publishing as a notable entry in contemporary Australian speculative fiction. The narrative is set in a post-apocalyptic Brisbane where a plague has decimated the human population, leaving the city in the hands of the undead, and follows a boy named Fintan who serves as a day boy for a vampire master. Trent Jamieson developed this concept to explore themes of survival and loyalty against a grim, gothic backdrop, grounding the fantastical elements in a recognizable but shattered urban landscape.
The novel received critical attention for its distinct atmospheric writing and its innovative approach to traditional vampire tropes. Jamieson’s prose focuses heavily on the sensory details of a decaying world, prioritizing character development over straightforward genre conventions. Upon its release, it was recognized for its contribution to Australian dark fantasy and its ability to blend emotional weight with the suspenseful requirements of the horror genre.
