David, Matthes und Ich

Published in 2005 by Verlag für Moderne Kunst, David, Matthes und Ich serves as a focused monograph on the early career of German painter Matthias Weischer. The book emerged during a period of significant international recognition for the Leipzig School, a movement characterized by a renewed interest in figurative painting and a highly technical, layered approach to canvas. This publication captures Weischer’s interest in interior spaces, architectural ambiguity, and the tension between traditional painterly methods and contemporary subject matter.

The volume was designed to complement the artist's exhibitions from the mid-2000s, providing readers with an intimate view of his meticulously constructed environments. Through a combination of full-color reproductions and critical essays, the work articulates Weischer’s stylistic focus on the uncanny, where cluttered, stage-like rooms evoke a sense of theatrical stillness. It is regarded by collectors of contemporary German art as a primary resource for documenting the stylistic evolution of the New Leipzig School during its height of global critical and commercial attention.
