Where it came from
Published in 1974 by the Visual Arts Office for Abroad, this volume serves as a comprehensive catalog dedicated to the conceptual and photographic works of Ger van Elk. Emerging from the Dutch conceptual art scene, Van Elk was a pivotal figure who bridged the gap between traditional painting and the emerging field of conceptualism, often utilizing irony and self-referential humor to challenge the status of the artist and the nature of the artwork itself.
The publication was designed to document a body of work characterized by its exploration of the artist's own image and the theatricality of the photographic medium. By manipulating photographic prints through painting and assemblage, Van Elk sought to destabilize the viewer's perception of reality. The catalog was well-received within European artistic circles for its clear presentation of Van Elk's aesthetic, which frequently played with the boundaries of physical space and subjective experience.
