Where it came from
Published in 2013 by Hatje Cantz, this volume accompanies the work of Gert & Uwe Tobias, twin brothers from Transylvania whose artistic practice is deeply rooted in the traditions of folk art, woodcut prints, and modernist abstraction. The book serves as a comprehensive catalog for their Dresden Paraphrases, a series that engages directly with the historical and cultural landscape of Dresden, reinterpreting regional aesthetics through their signature vibrant, layered, and often surreal visual language.
The publication was curated with an introductory text by Michael Hering, providing critical context for how the Tobias brothers blend historical references with contemporary graphic design. Their work is characterized by a meticulous, hand-crafted approach to printmaking that sits in tension with their digital-era sensibilities. The book was received as a definitive monograph on this specific project, highlighting their unique ability to bridge the gap between archaic craft and modern conceptual installation art.
