Where it came from
Published in 2010 by Kerber Verlag, this monograph serves as a comprehensive survey of the work of Gert Tobias, a Romanian-born artist celebrated for his intricate, large-scale woodcut prints. The volume explores his unique synthesis of Transylvanian folklore, constructivist abstraction, and pop-culture motifs, capturing a period when the artist’s work gained significant traction in the international contemporary art scene.
The design of the book reflects the distinct aesthetic of the Tobias brothers, whose collaborative and individual practices often bridge the gap between traditional craft and contemporary graphic design. The publication was well-received by critics for its high-quality reproduction of the artist's labor-intensive woodcut techniques, effectively documenting his effort to revitalize an ancient medium through a modern, often eerie, visual vocabulary.
