Where it came from
This volume documents the ambitious 2011 exhibition held within the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, Sicily, where the Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj placed his monumental, fragment-like bronze figures among the ancient Greek ruins. The project was designed to create a dialogue between contemporary aesthetics and classical antiquity, contrasting the weathered, rugged textures of the stone temples with Mitoraj’s smooth, idealized, yet broken anatomical forms.
The book serves as a permanent record of this site-specific installation, capturing the visual synthesis of twentieth-century neoclassicism and the archeological landscape. Mitoraj, known for his obsession with the fractured beauty of Hellenistic art, oversaw the selection of photography for the volume to reflect how his works—such as the winged Icarus or the colossal heads—interact with the Mediterranean light and the historical silhouette of the Concordia Temple, a juxtaposition that received critical acclaim for its haunting, timeless atmosphere.
