Imagining Life on the Moon During the Rise of the Telescope

Published in 2020 by Brom Bones Books, this volume serves as a curated historical anthology detailing the evolution of lunar speculation. Tim Prasil compiled a collection of early science fiction, satirical essays, and astronomical observations that emerged during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. The text specifically explores the cultural shift that occurred as the telescope transformed the moon from a mythological or celestial deity into a tangible, explorable landscape.

The book is designed to provide context for the burgeoning field of lunar studies, framing these early literary accounts against the backdrop of genuine scientific progress. Prasil’s editorial approach emphasizes the intersection of budding scientific inquiry and the unrestrained imagination of writers who attempted to envision alien civilizations long before space flight was physically possible. It is regarded as a scholarly resource for those interested in the history of science and the origins of extraterrestrial fiction.
