Searching for dragons

Searching for Dragons, the second installment of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, was originally published in 1990 before receiving various international editions, including this 1991 release from Bertelsmann in Munich. Written by Patricia C. Wrede, the series subverted traditional fairy tale tropes by centering on Princess Cimorene, a character who famously rejects the role of a damsel in distress in favor of autonomy and adventure. This narrative shift captured the imaginations of young readers during the early 1990s, establishing the series as a staple of fantasy literature.

The design and tone of the series were crafted to balance whimsical fantasy elements with a grounded, practical sense of humor. Wrede’s approach to world-building, which treats dragons and magical creatures with a blend of reverence and bureaucratic absurdity, earned critical acclaim for its ingenuity. Over the decades, the series has maintained a devoted following, appreciated for its clever prose and the enduring appeal of a protagonist who actively chooses her own path despite the expectations of her kingdom.
