The messianic secret

Originally published in German as Das Messiasgeheimnis in den Evangelien in 1901, this work by William Wrede stands as a cornerstone of twentieth-century biblical criticism. Wrede sought to challenge the prevailing quest for the historical Jesus by arguing that the 'messianic secret'—the motif where Jesus commands silence regarding his identity—was not a historical occurrence, but a theological construct introduced by the author of the Gospel of Mark to account for why Jesus was not recognized as the Messiah during his lifetime.

The 1971 edition published by James Clarke and Company brought this influential critique to a wider English-speaking academic audience. Wrede's methodology significantly shaped modern redaction criticism, shifting focus from the life of the historical figure to the creative role of the gospel writers themselves. While his theories were initially met with considerable resistance by more conservative theologians, the book eventually secured its place as an essential text for understanding the literary and theological development of the New Testament.
