Das Messiasgeheimnis in den Evangelien

William Wrede’s Das Messiasgeheimnis in den Evangelien, published in 1901 by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, stands as a seminal work in the history of critical biblical scholarship. Wrede, a German theologian associated with the History of Religions School, wrote this text during a period of intense academic scrutiny regarding the nature of the Gospels. His primary objective was to challenge the prevailing assumption that the Gospel of Mark offered a straightforward, historical narrative of Jesus’s life, suggesting instead that the 'messianic secret'—Jesus's command for his identity to remain hidden—was a theological construct developed by the early church rather than a historical reality.

The book’s design and argument were revolutionary, effectively shifting the landscape of New Testament studies by introducing the concept of redaction criticism. Wrede argued that the evangelists were not merely chroniclers but active theologians who shaped their material to serve specific religious goals. While the work initially met with significant resistance from traditionalist scholars who feared it undermined the historicity of the Gospels, it ultimately became a foundational pillar for twentieth-century theology. Its enduring influence lies in its rigorous methodology, which forced generations of scholars to grapple with the tension between theological interpretation and historical fact.
