Originally published in German as Das Entstehen des Neuen Testaments in 1907, this work by William Wrede represents a cornerstone of the Religionsgeschichtliche Schule, or History of Religions School. Wrede sought to strip away traditional theological interpretations of the New Testament, instead analyzing the texts as historical products shaped by the social, political, and cultural environment of the early Christian communities. His approach was intentionally critical and academic, aiming to provide a secularized, rigorous reading of the foundational documents of Christianity.

The 1909 Harper and Brothers publication brought Wrede's methodology to a wider English-speaking audience during a period of intense theological debate in Western academia. As a leading scholar of his time, Wrede's focus on the 'messianic secret' and his skepticism regarding historical objectivity influenced generations of biblical critics. While his work was met with significant resistance from conservative ecclesiastical circles of the early 20th century, it remains a frequently cited foundational text for students of modern historical-critical biblical scholarship.
