Where it came from
This volume represents a unique cross-cultural experiment in the Tomb Raider franchise, where Western game intellectual property was adapted into the Japanese tankobon manga format. Published by Bandai Entertainment in 2007, the collection reflects the mid-2000s trend of reconciling global multimedia brands with the distinct visual storytelling techniques of Japanese comics.
The artwork was spearheaded by Andy Park, whose stylistic background in comic book illustration and visual development for the Tomb Raider games deeply influenced the character's depiction. Park sought to translate Lara Croft’s athletic and cinematic character design into a fluid, action-oriented aesthetic, resulting in a work that balances the realism of the original video games with the stylized pacing characteristic of the manga medium.
