Where it came from
A Distance. A Lack. was released in 2011 by The Last Morning Soundtrack, the musical project of American singer-songwriter Mark A. Kluepfel. Emerging from the introspective indie-folk scene, the album serves as a dense, atmospheric exploration of isolation and memory. It was distributed through Mosaic Music Distribution, a platform that facilitated independent artists in reaching listeners during a period when the shift toward digital music necessitated creative physical releases for dedicated fans.
The album is noted for its minimalist aesthetic and melancholic arrangements, which reflect Kluepfel’s penchant for ambient textures and quiet, conversational vocals. While The Last Morning Soundtrack often utilized acoustic foundations, this release embraced layered instrumentation that sought to create a sense of vast, open space. Critical reception at the time highlighted the record's cohesive mood, identifying it as a thoughtful entry in the introspective post-folk canon of the early 2010s.
