Where it came from
A Sonic Map of Dornoch was released in 2018 through the label Focused Silence, serving as a contemplative exploration of the Scottish coastal town of Dornoch. Andrew Backhouse composed this work to translate the sensory experience of a specific geography into sound, utilizing field recordings and atmospheric textures to create a sense of place. The project is rooted in the tradition of soundscape composition, where the artist acts as an auditor of the environment, attempting to bridge the gap between the listener and the physical landscape of the Highlands.
The design of the work reflects a minimalist, ambient aesthetic, emphasizing the quietude and natural history of the region. Backhouse aimed to provide an immersive, meditative space that favors subtle sonic shifts over conventional song structures. Upon its release, it found a modest but appreciative audience within the niche community of ambient and experimental field recording enthusiasts, who valued it for its meticulous capture of the coastal atmosphere and its dedication to the concept of phonography.
