Where it came from
Released in 2008 on the Danish label Stunt Records, A Time For Love represents a sophisticated collaborative effort between American jazz pianist Kenny Werner and Danish saxophonist Jens Søndergaard. The project was conceived as a showcase for their shared appreciation of the ballad form, emphasizing lyrical improvisation and intimate dialogue between the two musicians. Stunt Records, known for its commitment to high-fidelity production, provided the ideal environment for this acoustic-focused session.
The album serves as a masterclass in jazz restraint, with the design and musical direction reflecting a deep commitment to the legacy of the Great American Songbook. By pairing Werner’s harmonically adventurous piano style with Søndergaard’s nuanced, soulful tenor saxophone, the record aimed to capture a timeless, melancholic atmosphere. Upon its release, critics noted the technical proficiency and emotional gravity of the performances, cementing the disc as a respected entry in the late 2000s European jazz catalog.
