Where it came from
Released in 2015 as a self-titled independent project, Big Virginia Sky serves as the debut full-length effort for the bluegrass ensemble of the same name. Hailing from the Appalachian region, the group sought to capture the high-energy, traditional sensibilities of string band music while injecting contemporary arrangements into their original compositions and covers.
The album was produced independently, reflecting the band's commitment to the DIY ethic often found in the modern bluegrass scene. The record was designed to showcase the technical proficiency of its members on instruments such as the banjo, fiddle, and mandolin, aiming to build a bridge between classic mountain sounds and a clean, modern production aesthetic intended for a wider folk audience.
