Where it came from
Released in 2014 by Warner Music France, this self-titled collaborative album marked the first time the longtime friends and prolific songwriting duo, Alain Souchon and Laurent Voulzy, recorded a full-length project together. Their partnership had been foundational to French chanson and pop since the 1970s, with Voulzy typically composing music for Souchon’s lyrics, but this record served as a rare, unified creative endeavor where both artists shared vocal duties and creative direction throughout.
The album’s design and musical direction reflect a stripped-back, acoustic-leaning aesthetic intended to highlight the intricate synergy of their decades-long rapport. Featuring tracks that evoke nostalgic pop sensibilities and melancholic lyrical depth, the record was received with significant critical and commercial success in France, debuting at number one on the national charts and eventually achieving triple platinum status, solidifying the pair’s enduring relevance in the contemporary French music landscape.
