Alexandrie Alexandra (Joey Negro Remixes)

The 1995 release of the Joey Negro remix of 'Alexandrie Alexandra' served as a tribute to the legacy of Claude François, the legendary French pop icon whose backing dancers, Les Clodettes, were the original performers of this track. Released under the Versailles label, this project sought to bridge the gap between 1970s chanson and the burgeoning house music scene of the mid-90s, offering a modern, dance-floor-oriented interpretation of one of the most recognizable songs in Francophone pop culture.

The remix was helmed by Dave Lee, better known by his stage name Joey Negro, a pioneering figure in the British house music scene celebrated for his deep knowledge of disco and soul. By layering sophisticated electronic production over the original high-energy vocal tracks, Lee aimed to revitalize the disco-pop aesthetic for contemporary clubs. The remix was well-received by those interested in the crossover potential between retro kitsch and club-focused house music, marking a notable moment where vintage French pop was filtered through a sophisticated UK dance lens.
