An Introduction To Dmitri Shostakovich

Released in 2006 by Chandos Records, this compilation serves as a curated entry point into the vast and complex symphonic output of Dmitri Shostakovich. Produced as part of the label's commitment to high-fidelity classical recordings, the disc draws from their extensive catalog of Shostakovich performances, primarily featuring the BBC Philharmonic under the baton of conductor Vassily Sinaisky.

The album was designed for listeners seeking an accessible overview of the composer's stylistic range, balancing his more aggressive, modernist tendencies with his deeply introspective melodic writing. Chandos has long been recognized for their audiophile-grade production standards, and this release follows their tradition of providing rigorous, scholarly liner notes intended to provide historical context to a 20th-century Russian master whose work was often deeply intertwined with the political pressures of the Soviet era.
