Where it came from
Released in 2006 by the British classical label Chandos Records, this compilation serves as a curated primer into the orchestral and chamber works of Sergei Prokofiev. It emerged as part of a trend among high-fidelity labels to offer accessible entry points for listeners navigating the extensive discography of 20th-century Russian composers, focusing on selecting representative highlights that define the composer's distinct harmonic language.
The production draws from the label's existing catalog, featuring performances by esteemed ensembles often associated with the Chandos house style. By emphasizing the contrast between Prokofiev's satirical wit and his more lyrical, melancholic textures, the release was designed to showcase the technical precision of the recordings while providing a cohesive educational narrative for those new to his complex musical output.
