Chamber Works By Frederick Block

This album is part of the ongoing Music in Exile series by the ARC Ensemble, a project dedicated to identifying, researching, and performing the music of composers suppressed or displaced by the Third Reich. Frederick Block was a Viennese composer whose career was abruptly halted by his forced emigration to the United States in 1938. Much of his work remained unperformed and neglected for decades after his death, tucked away in archival collections until the ensemble began its systematic effort to reconstruct his chamber output.

The recording process was guided by the ARC Ensemble's commitment to musicological accuracy, relying on the study of original manuscripts to bring Block's late-romantic and modernist sensibilities to life. Released by Chandos in 2024, the album serves as a definitive contemporary interpretation of his chamber works. Critics have noted the release for its technical precision and its success in reintroducing a lost voice of the twentieth-century European diaspora to modern audiences.
