Where it came from
Released in 2006 by Chandos Records, this installment is part of a comprehensive project dedicated to cataloging the cinematic output of Dmitri Shostakovich. During his career, Shostakovich composed scores for dozens of films to support himself and comply with Soviet cultural expectations, often utilizing music that showcased his melodic genius despite the constraints of the state-sponsored film industry.
The album features the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Vassily Sinaisky, a pairing celebrated for their idiomatic approach to 20th-century Russian repertoire. The recording captures suites from films such as 'The Gadfly' and 'Five Days - Five Nights,' emphasizing the dramatic flair and lyrical depth that Shostakovich brought to the screen. Critics have generally praised the series for its high production values and for elevating these functional scores into standalone concert works.
