An Werner Pirchner »...Vom Rauhen Leben«

Werner Pirchner was a prominent Austrian composer known for his idiosyncratic, genre-defying approach that bridged the gap between serious contemporary music and avant-garde jazz. The release of »...Vom Rauhen Leben« by the label Col Legno serves as a retrospective of his creative spirit, specifically highlighting his work alongside the saxophone quartet Akkosax. The collection captures Pirchner’s penchant for lyrical depth paired with sudden, sharp irony, reflecting his unique position within the late 20th-century Tyrolean music scene.

The collaboration with Akkosax emphasizes the intricate textures of Pirchner's compositions, which often challenge the listener by shifting abruptly between melodic beauty and dissonant experimentalism. By curating these pieces for a dedicated 2009 release, Col Legno aimed to preserve the structural complexity and emotional playfulness that defined Pirchner’s later works. The project remains a significant entry in the label's catalog, celebrated by critics for its fidelity to the composer's original intent and the technical precision of the quartet’s performance.
