Antoinette Konan

Antoinette Konan is a celebrated Ivorian musician known for her mastery of the ahoko, a traditional Baoulé instrument. This particular release is a reissue produced by Awesome Tapes From Africa, a label dedicated to archiving and distributing cassette-era African music that had previously been difficult to access outside of its home regions. By digitizing and pressing Konan's work onto CD, the label sought to preserve the sonic textures of her 1980s output for a global audience.

The album showcases Konan's innovative blend of traditional rhythm with synthesizers and production techniques typical of the 1980s West African pop landscape. The design and liner notes reflect the label's commitment to archival integrity, providing historical context for the songs while celebrating the rhythmic complexity of Konan's ahoko playing. Upon its reissue, the project was well received by music critics for highlighting an essential, under-documented figure in African contemporary music.
