Balettsuiten = Ballet Suites / Schwanensee = Swan Lake · Dornröschen = The Sleeping Beauty

This 1987 release by the German label Capriccio serves as a classic entry in their catalog, which was established in the mid-1980s to capitalize on the then-nascent compact disc format. The recording features selections from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's iconic ballet suites, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty, presenting the listener with the quintessential melodic highlights of 19th-century Russian romanticism. By gathering these suites onto a single disc, the label aimed to provide a high-fidelity introduction to the composer's most recognizable orchestral works.

The production philosophy behind Capriccio's early digital releases often focused on clarity and a clean, spacious soundstage, intended to demonstrate the superior dynamic range that the compact disc offered over traditional vinyl. These recordings were typically performed by ensembles based in Eastern Europe or the German Democratic Republic, reflecting the label's focus on accessible, high-quality repertoire for a growing international audience of classical music collectors during the format's initial surge in popularity.
