Big Fat Brass / Bill's Bag

Released by Capitol Records in 2001, this compilation serves as a retrospective of the arrangements and big band stylings of Billy May. May was a defining figure in the mid-century Capitol sound, renowned for his ability to write aggressive, brass-heavy charts that balanced technical complexity with a sense of playfulness. This collection draws from his prolific output during the 1950s, a period where his work with artists like Frank Sinatra helped define the definitive jazz-pop aesthetic of the era.

The album curates material from two of his most distinct sessions, highlighting his signature 'slurping' saxophone technique and powerful brass flourishes. As a composer and arranger, May aimed to push the limits of orchestral swing while remaining accessible to the record-buying public. Upon its release in the digital era, the collection was received by critics as a necessary preservation of May's influential contribution to orchestral jazz, ensuring his rhythmic innovations remained available to modern listeners.
