Where it came from
Released in 1992 on the Thorofon label, 'Bilder zum Hören' serves as a dedicated showcase for the tape compositions of Rüdiger Rüfer. The album emerged from the specialized landscape of late 20th-century German experimental music, a scene heavily invested in Musique Concrète and the manipulation of magnetic tape as a primary medium for sonic exploration. It was produced during a period when labels like Thorofon were instrumental in archiving works that bridged the gap between academic electroacoustic composition and the avant-garde underground.
The album's conceptual design centers on the synesthetic relationship between sound and imagery, aiming to translate auditory experience into mental landscapes. By utilizing tape manipulation techniques, Rüfer sought to create immersive, non-narrative structures that encourage active, visual-adjacent listening. Upon its release, the recording was primarily received within circles of contemporary classical enthusiasts and sound art collectors, valued for its rigorous technical approach to spatial sound and its contribution to the enduring legacy of German tape music.
