Where it came from
Bobo Jenkins Presents Big Star All Stars was released in 2001 by P-Vine Records, a Japanese label renowned for its dedication to archiving and reissuing American blues and soul music. The album serves as a compilation centered around the work of John 'Bobo' Jenkins, a Detroit-based bluesman known for his raw, electric style and his significant role in the Motor City blues scene as both a performer and a promoter who captured the sounds of local musicians.
The collection was curated to showcase the gritty, unpolished aesthetic that defined Jenkins' musical output, reflecting the atmospheric and localized nature of the Detroit blues tradition. By bringing together various artists associated with his circle, the compilation aims to preserve a specific window of mid-20th-century blues history. Its production by P-Vine reflects a broader trend of international record labels acting as stewards for regional American music that might otherwise have been neglected by mainstream historical discourse.
