Bobby Womack & Barry White

This 2009 compilation, released under the PIAS France label, serves as a retrospective tribute to two titans of soul and R&B: Bobby Womack and Barry White. The collection was designed to highlight the distinct legacies of these artists, contrasting Womack’s gritty, gospel-infused storytelling with White’s lush, orchestral velvet-soul production. It emerged during a period of renewed critical interest in classic soul music, aiming to provide a accessible entry point for new listeners while functioning as a curated sampler of their respective mid-to-late 20th-century catalogs.

The packaging and design aesthetic prioritize a clean, archival look, typical of PIAS releases of that era. By placing these two legends side-by-side, the collection creates a bridge between Womack’s raw, bluesy intensity and White’s polished, romantic grandeur. While the release was primarily intended for the European market to capitalize on the enduring international popularity of both performers, it received generally favorable feedback for its thoughtful selection of tracks that capture the definitive vocal styles of the two men.
