Where it came from
Des Hauts, Des Bas was released in 2011 on the PIAS France label, serving as a significant collaborative project between French singer-songwriter Florent Marchet and Gaëtan Roussel, the frontman of the band Louise Attaque. The collaboration emerged from a mutual respect within the French pop-rock scene, with the two artists aiming to blend Marchet’s sophisticated, piano-driven sensibilities with the more energetic, alternative rock textures characteristic of Roussel’s work.
The album was received as a polished contribution to the contemporary French chanson landscape, highlighting the thematic complexity and melodic craft both men had cultivated in their respective solo and group careers. Critics noted the record for its layered production and introspective lyrical content, viewing it as a bridge between the intimate storytelling of the French tradition and modern, synth-influenced rock arrangements.
