Where it came from
This 2013 release from the Flawed Gems label is a reissue of the self-titled debut album by the Japanese progressive rock band Carmen Maki & OZ, originally released in 1975. The band was led by the iconic singer Carmen Maki, who transitioned from her roots in underground folk and jazz-rock to front this highly influential ensemble. The album is widely regarded as a cornerstone of 1970s Japanese progressive rock, blending hard rock sensibilities with complex, atmospheric compositions that mirrored the experimental spirit of the era.
The album's sound is defined by its dramatic, blues-inflected arrangements and Maki's powerful, emotive vocal delivery, which set it apart from contemporary acts. By the time this specific CD edition was issued, the album had secured its reputation as a cult classic within global record-collecting circles. Critics often point to this debut as the definitive showcase of the band's interplay between virtuosic guitar work and Maki's commanding stage presence, ensuring its legacy long after the group's dissolution in the late 1970s.
