Where it came from
This 2021 release from the Somm label highlights the chamber music of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, an Austrian-born composer who achieved fame as a child prodigy before becoming a legendary figure in Hollywood's golden age of film scoring. The compilation captures a late-romantic sensibility that defined his early career in Vienna, bridging the gap between the complex harmonic language of Mahler and Strauss and the lush, melodic accessibility he later mastered for cinema.
The Eusebius Quartet, joined by pianist Alasdair Beatson, delivers performances that emphasize the intricate structural integrity of these pieces, which were composed across disparate periods of Korngold's life. Recorded with the high fidelity expected of modern chamber releases, the album was curated to illuminate the composer's transition from an European concert hall virtuoso to a defining voice in American film music, earning praise for its technical precision and emotional resonance.
