Chamber Music Of Brahms And Jenner

Released in 2017 on the Skylark Music label, this recording brings together chamber works by Johannes Brahms and his sole formal pupil, Gustav Jenner. The album serves as a scholarly and artistic bridge, highlighting the lineage of Romantic-era composition by pairing Brahms’s established Horn Trio in E-flat major with Jenner’s lesser-known Trio in E-flat major. The project reflects a dedicated effort to document the influence of Brahms on his successors, providing listeners with a nuanced look at how the late Romantic aesthetic evolved within the master-pupil dynamic.

The ensemble features a collaboration between esteemed Canadian performers, including hornist Martin Hackleman, pianist Jane Coop, violinist Martin Beaver, and clarinetist James Campbell. The artists chose these pieces to showcase the contrapuntal rigor and melodic warmth characteristic of the Viennese tradition. Critics and chamber music enthusiasts generally received the album as a valuable contribution to the discography of the period, noting the technical precision of the performances and the thoughtful, archival-minded curation of the program.
