Chamber Music Of Brahms And Jenner

Released in 2017 by CBC Records, this recording brings together chamber works by Johannes Brahms and his only formal composition student, Gustav Jenner. The project serves to illuminate the direct musical lineage between the two composers, highlighting how Jenner integrated the rigorous formal traditions of his teacher while developing his own distinct voice within the late-Romantic German tradition. By pairing these pieces, the album functions as a bridge, allowing listeners to hear the foundational influence of Brahms alongside the earnest, melodic contributions of his protégé.

The recording features an ensemble of distinguished Canadian musicians, including horn player Martin Hackleman, pianist Jane Coop, violinist Martin Beaver, and clarinetist James Campbell. Their collaboration was driven by an interpretive goal to balance Brahms’s intricate structural density with the more intimate, lyrical qualities found in Jenner’s chamber writing. Upon its release, the recording was noted for its technical clarity and the nuanced interplay between the performers, earning recognition for its role in reviving interest in Jenner's catalog, which has historically been overshadowed by the works of his mentor.
