Where it came from
The Chant Grégorien - Anthologie Grégorienne was released in 1991 by the label Accord, drawing from the extensive recorded archives of the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. The Solesmes congregation has long been considered the global authority on Gregorian chant, having spent decades in the late 19th and 20th centuries restoring the authentic melodies and rhythmic nuances of the tradition through scholarly research and communal practice.
Led by Dom Joseph Gajard, the choir sought to preserve a meditative and strictly liturgical sound that eschews performative flair in favor of communal devotion. This anthology serves as a comprehensive distillation of the Abbey's work, capturing the ethereal, monophonic purity that influenced both the development of Western classical music and the broader New Age music popularity of the 1990s. The release was received as an essential reference for those seeking historical authenticity in choral recording.
