D-Stringz

D-Stringz was released in 2015 by the iconic Impulse! label through its French division. The project brought together three virtuosos—bassist Stanley Clarke, guitarist Biréli Lagrène, and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty—each a titan in the fusion and jazz genres. The album was born from a collaborative tour that sought to strip back the complex arrangements often associated with these musicians in favor of an intimate, acoustic-leaning dialogue that highlighted their individual technical mastery and improvisational chemistry.

The album serves as a sophisticated snapshot of three distinct jazz lineages converging on a common stage. The design and production aimed to preserve the organic interplay of the trio, capturing the nuance of their acoustic exchanges without the heavy studio processing typical of their earlier fusion work. Upon its release, it was warmly received by critics and long-term listeners, who praised the disc for its balance of high-level musicianship and the palpable sense of camaraderie that defined the trio's live performances.
