Der Wald (Opera In One Act)

Composed by Dame Ethel Smyth at the turn of the 20th century, Der Wald—or The Forest—represents a pivotal moment in operatic history as the first opera by a female composer to be performed at both the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Smyth wrote the libretto in German before translating it herself into English, crafting a dark, symbolic work that explores the destructive nature of human desire against the backdrop of an indifferent, ancient forest. The work reflects Smyth’s Wagnerian influences while asserting her own distinct, modernist harmonic language.

This 2023 recording by Resonus Classics, featuring conductor John Andrews and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, serves as a significant modern revival of the score. The production aimed to provide a definitive, high-fidelity interpretation of Smyth's under-performed masterpiece, utilizing the vocal talents of Natalya Romaniw and Claire Barnett-Jones to capture the psychological intensity of the narrative. Critically, this release has been lauded for bringing clarity and structural coherence to a complex score that had largely languished in obscurity for decades, marking a vital contribution to the archival preservation of Smyth's operatic legacy.
