Where it came from
Commissioned to mark the 150th anniversary of the Belfast Cathedral, Philip Wilby's An English Passion According to Saint Matthew was composed to provide a modern, liturgical interpretation of the Passion narrative. Drawing inspiration from the tradition of English choral music, Wilby utilized an English-language libretto that sought to make the sacred text more immediate and accessible to contemporary congregations and audiences alike.
The 2022 Resonus Classics recording features Matthew Owens leading the Belfast Cathedral Choir alongside a cast of distinguished soloists. The production is noted for its sensitive handling of Wilby's complex, emotionally resonant score, which blends traditional harmonic structures with the demands of a large-scale modern work. Upon release, it was recognized for its contribution to the contemporary sacred repertoire and its effective synthesis of vocal and instrumental textures.
