Dmitry Masleev

Released in 2017 by the historic Melodiya label, this album serves as a landmark recording for Russian pianist Dmitry Masleev following his triumph at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition. The collection highlights his technical precision and interpretive depth, featuring a program that juxtaposes the structural clarity of Domenico Scarlatti’s sonatas with the complex, rhythmic narratives of Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. The collaborative effort with the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan under the baton of Alexander Sladkovsky adds a distinct layer of Russian symphonic tradition to the project.

The album was designed to capture the nuance of Masleev’s live performances, reflecting a movement in classical music toward balancing virtuosic tradition with contemporary recording standards. Upon its release, critics noted the thoughtful programming, which bridged the gap between Baroque intimacy and twentieth-century Soviet grandiosity. The production team aimed to maintain the resonant, clear aesthetic associated with the Melodiya label, ensuring that the interplay between the soloist and the Tatarstan ensemble remained the focal point of the listener experience.
