Where it came from
Dreyfus Night in Paris was recorded live at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 1994, capturing a singular concert event that brought together an elite ensemble of jazz musicians. Organized by the Dreyfus Jazz label, the performance was intended to showcase the improvisational synergy between bassist Marcus Miller, pianist Michel Petrucciani, guitarist Biréli Lagrène, drummer Lenny White, and saxophonist Kenny Garrett. The project highlights the label's commitment to fostering cross-generational jazz collaborations, blending Miller’s fusion sensibilities with the virtuosic, post-bop foundation of the other instrumentalists.
The album reflects a design philosophy centered on the raw, unfiltered energy of a high-stakes concert setting. Produced to emphasize the spontaneous interplay between these masters, the recordings serve as a definitive document of the label's late-century roster. Upon release, it was received as a technically impressive exhibition of musicianship, noted by critics for its balance of original compositions and standard repertoire, effectively cementing the reputations of both the participating artists and the Dreyfus Jazz imprint in the international market.
