Where it came from
Released in 2002 under the naïve label, Folías y Canarios represents a significant entry in the discography of Hespèrion XX, the ensemble founded by Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras. The album explores the evolution of the 'folía' and 'canario' dance forms, tracing their migration from the Iberian Peninsula to the New World during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It serves as a scholarly yet vital exploration of the cross-pollination between Spanish court music and folk traditions.
Jordi Savall is renowned for his meticulous research into historical performance practices, often reviving forgotten manuscripts with a blend of academic rigor and expressive nuance. In this recording, he utilizes period instrumentation to capture the improvisational spirit inherent in early music. The album was received by critics as a masterclass in Baroque atmospheric textures, cementing Savall’s reputation for his ability to render centuries-old musical forms accessible and deeply emotive to modern audiences.
