For Lester And Billie (A Tribute To Lester Young And Billie Holiday)

Released in 1994 on the Swedish jazz label Phontastic, this album serves as a respectful homage to the enduring legacies of tenor saxophonist Lester Young and vocalist Billie Holiday. It features the acclaimed Swedish jazz singer Monica Zetterlund, whose career was defined by her ability to bridge the gap between traditional jazz standards and Nordic melancholy. Accompanied by bassist Red Mitchell, saxophonist Nisse Sandström, and pianist Horace Parlan, Zetterlund interprets material deeply associated with the two American legends, grounding the tribute in a mature, understated aesthetic.

The album reflects a collaborative effort within the tight-knit Swedish jazz scene of the 1990s, capturing a poignant moment in Zetterlund’s later discography. Production focused on a stripped-back, intimate sound that emphasizes the interplay between the instrumentalists and the vocalist’s characteristic phrasing. Upon release, it was well-received by European jazz critics as a sincere, thoughtful contribution to the expansive canon of Billie Holiday and Lester Young tributes, valued for its authenticity rather than stylistic reinvention.
