Where it came from
The 2009 release For Children, issued by the German label MDG, is a contemporary compilation that brings together piano works by renowned 20th and 21st-century composers, including Sofia Gubaidulina, György Kurtág, and Helmut Lachenmann. The collection was curated and performed by pianist Steffen Schleiermacher, who has long been recognized for his commitment to avant-garde and experimental piano repertoire. The project was conceived as an exploration of how modern composers approach the simplicity, technical challenges, and pedagogical nature of music written for or inspired by childhood.
Steffen Schleiermacher’s design for the program balances the austerity of contemporary classical composition with the whimsical connotations inherent in the theme of childhood. MDG, known for its high-fidelity audio engineering, produced the recording to capture the nuanced textures and percussive nuances required by these specific scores. Upon its release, the album was received as a scholarly yet accessible entry in the MDG catalog, praised by critics for its thoughtful sequencing and for highlighting the distinct musical vocabularies these composers employ when stripping away traditional virtuosic flourishes.
